Chapter 7

I watch over Layla's shoulder as she carefully applies the dragon stencil to Rory's back. Rory is a loyal customer who’s been flying from Vegas to wherever I am for over seven years. He was a volunteer "canvas" at a tattoo convention a lifetime ago, and now he only lets me work on him. Well, he did anyway.

He and Layla hit it off like long-lost friends when he showed up an hour ago, and surprisingly, he’s agreed to let her practice some of her skills in exchange for a slight discount.

"Good," I mumble when she catches herself. She doesn’t need my approval. The girl has been killing it. I’m sure she’s ready to be cut loose and not have me watching over her shoulder, but I have to know that she’s capable. Honestly, though, she’s been killing it.

This is the third tattoo I’ve watched her do, and she’s ready. In a few weeks, I plan to let her start scheduling clients of her own.

“Perfect,” I whisper under my breath.

Zephyr was an idiot for not helping build her confidence. Although the girl doesn’t need anyone stroking her ego, her talent proves she deserves to be here.

“King, your woman just pulled in.” Without looking up, I nodded to let Crow know I heard him.

“I’ll be right back,” I tell them.

When I walk into the lobby, I expect to find Pixie coming through the door but don’t see her anywhere.

“She still out there in her car?” I ask Crow.

When he shrugs his shoulders, I move around the counter and peek out the window. She’s out there just sitting in her car with a blank look on her face.

I frown, wondering what’s going on.

For the last couple of days, it’s felt like she’s been ghosting me even though she agreed to give this thing between us a shot.

I thought we had a good time together on Sunday. I made us dinner while she finished up her laundry. We joked and laughed while we ate. She helped me clean up the mess from dinner, and then we sat on the couch, talking about anything and everything. We have so much in common, it’s crazy.

Then Monday rolled around, and she got a call about her dad. I’m not sure what’s going on with him, but she took off like her ass was on fire, and ever since, it’s been basically radio silence.

It's not that I haven’t seen her, I have. It’s just that there’s a vibe that clearly says back the fuck off, I’m dealing with some shit. It’s not all on her, though. I’ve been more unavailable too. Since we announced that we’ve set up shop in Miami, Crow and I have been insanely busy.

I’m thankful business is booming, but with that comes long hours. It was to be expected, but I need to check in with my girl to make sure we’re still in a good place.

Pushing through the front door, I make my way out to her car.

“Hey, baby,” I say when she opens her door.
